Podcasts

I’ve only recently discovered the wonderful world of the iPod and the iTunes store and podcasts. Especially podcasts (they’re free, nice!). I especially like podcasts from public radio, like Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac, Story Corps… I also like The Moth, funny and sometimes quirky stories. I love to read, but I’m discovering the joy of being read to. And the great thing about this is that I CAN KNIT AND READ AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

My favoritest podcast is one I just happened upon when browsing the iTunes store yesterday. One of my most favorite fictional characters is Precious Ramotswe from one of my favorite books, Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. AMS is now writing a serial online book which is also being recorded and will be published next year. It is a daily book and will conclude in February. The writing isn’t finished yet. He is a very prolific author, at age 70-something. His energy is greatly to be admired. Even if you aren’t interested in the book, check out the articles about him and the book.

Alexander McCall Smith may appeal more to the 40+ crowd, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t appeal to my 30-ish children. Nothing extremely exciting happens in his books, just real life, day to day events told in a dry, humorous witty way. And of course the British/Scottish and in The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency case, Botswana-ish way of life is interesting to read/hear about. It’s the same day to day drama as we live, but in different surroundings.
